How Social Media and Staples Boost Small Business

Social Media for Small BusinessWhat do small businesses want? Fans! Yes, they really want you to Like them – on Facebook and Twitter and any other social media channel where they have a presence.

When it comes to a marketing “wish list,” small businesses would rather have a  whole lot of fans on Facebook than a celebrity endorsement or an ad during the Super Bowl. At least that’s how they responded to a recent poll from Staples. In fact, Staples conducted a survey of small businesses and how they use social media and discovered it’s a pretty big deal.

Specifically, the survey was intended to reveal how social media is integrated into small businesses’ daily operations. Among the highlights of the results, according to Staples, is that 40% feel that using a social media channel helps their business. Yet,  more than half  (53% ) of small business owners or leaders rate themselves as “novices” or simply don’t get how their business can benefit from social media.

Even if they aren’t convinced of the results, 61% of small businesses still use at least one social media channel. What are the preferred social networking sites used? No real surprise, but in order of priority it’s:

  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Twitter

The top three goals for social media usage include:

  • Engaging customers (50%)
  • Increasing sales (46%)
  • Creating brand awareness (44%)

Given the importance of social media to small businesses, Staples (which counts SMBs as a large segment of their customers) is offering to give a few lucky winners some much needed help in achieving their online marketing goals.

So, let’s talk about the contest. Three small businesses will win $50,000 each in digital marketing support (cash and prizes). All you have to do to enter is Like Staples on Facebook, and enter the Staples Push It Forward Contest by submitting a 75 word essay that answers the question: “What would a $50,000 digital marketing push from Staples mean for your small business?”
