Is mobile commerce (m-commerce) becoming a primary driver for online sales? And what impact (if any) is mobile advertising having on offline sales?” M-commerce, as it’s known, is definitely a force in online marketing; but experts are still waiting to see exactly how much of a force it is for businesses.
Consider that one in five cell phone owners in the U.S. have a smart phone. With those numbers, it’s no wonder that some projections show mobile advertising growing to more than $5 billion by 2015. But, is all that ad money really fueling activity by all those smart phone users? Is it time for your business to fully embrace m-commerce and mobile advertising? It’s hard to say.
If the numbers are any indication, lots of folks are throwing money at mobile advertising (see the Infographic from HighTable.com, below) in hopes of a big pay-off; but consumers (according to research commissioned by the Interactive Adveritsing Bureau – IAB) still seem to be in the early stages of all-out embracing mobile commence.
Here are the top “tasks” performed via smart phones, as reported by IAB after they tracked a week’s worth of activity by mobile users.

Searching for a store location – 18%
Comparing prices – 12%
Making digital purchase – 9%
Making physical purchase – 5%
Checking status on auction sites – 4%
Using mobile coupons – 3%
